Byzantine Coins

Rosie Weetch

Many of the early copper coins minted in the crusader states, like those in Antioch and Edessa, imitated existing Byzantine coins. The Museum of the Order of St John has a very small number of these Byzantine coins dating to the eleventh century. The collection includes a very rare coin of Nicephorus Basilicus that was only identified as part of this project.
