What is a tag?A tag acts like a keyword to help you find similar items and group them together for when you want to find related items in the future.
Use tags to …
- Find similar items: Tag items that relate to a similar theme (eg ‘coronation’ or ‘world war one’); when you click on the tag, the record you’ve added comes up. If lots of people use the same tag, you will see a complete list of everything with that user tag. You can add as many different tags as seem useful to each record.
- Label items in a way that suits you: For instance, if you’re working on a project related to airships in World War I and want to group them together, add a relevant tag. This will also help if you want to organise records under different (extra) headings from the ones already there.
Your tags are public, everyone can see them. So please don’t use obscene, spiteful or abusive tags, or tags that contain personal information.
There are two general ways to view user tags:
- All user tags are shown in the footer of the website under ‘Your tags’
- Search for specific tags by typing the following after our website URL: /collections/tags/[add the tag]. For example: /collections/tags/pot
User tags will also be visible in tagged records.
All user tags are visible by everyone. This is to help you and the other users of the website by making links between records that our catalogues don’t already make.
Delete tags by clicking on the pale-grey X icon. Please be considerate and don’t delete tags that are genuinely useful, which have been added by others.
Promotions of tags to subjects
We may, from time to time, use your tags to subject index one or more items.
